Rhode Island, the smallest state of USA! This weekend we decided to drive up to this coastline state surrounded by ocean. Famous for its colonial vibe, history, huge ocean front mansions & Atlantic ocean, it was worth the trip.

Neighbored by the states Connecticut & Massachusetts with an ocean border line, this state was among the last 13 colonies to become a US state. Famous cities in the state are Newport, Providence & Narragansett.

If you are driving from New Jersey its approximately 4 hours drive. The drive is indeed beautiful. You get to see the city, the bridges, the vast coast line & beaches!

With a day to explore, here are the top free places you can visit in Newport, Rhode Island.

1. Cliff Walk

Experience the panoramic ocean views on one side and huge historical mansions on the other side of this 3.5 mile cliff walk. The scenic view and the vast ocean offers such enchanting beauty and peace. So put on some waking shoes, grab a water bottle and you are all set. You can park for free near the Salve Regina University or at the Narragansett Avenue. The best time to visit is during the day or at the time of sunrise/sunset.

2. The Breakers Mansion

If you are short of time and want to see the The Breakers mansion directly then park near The Salve Regina University. The cliff walk has so many very popular mansions from the ancient times belonging to 1700’s, 1800’s.

The Breakers was built in 1893 in Renaissance style and is a huge 14 acre property with 70 rooms.

Nine of these grand homes are converted into museums and are open to public. You can book a tour of the ones you are interested in online.

3. Second Beach

Enjoy the 400 mile coast line of Rhode Island at The Sachuest Beach, popularly known as the second beach in Rhode Island. Its a mile long beach, very clean & has ample parking space. I loved how clean and peaceful it was. Come and watch the sunrise here. So beautiful.

4. Castle Hill Light House

The very popular Castle hill light house is located at the end of Ocean drive. It was a bit tough to find the light house as there is no clear way on the maps. In the end we actually did find it out. All worth it. So to locate this light house, head to Castle Hill Inn. Just before the hotel there is a public parking on the right with a path covered in the white sea shore shells. After parking the car, just across the road there is a two minute walk to the lighthouse.

5. Beaver Trail State Park & Light house Museum

The Beaver trail state park situated at the tip of Jamestown. Built in 1856, it is the third oldest light house of United States. The park is open to public and there is ample free parking space near the light house. Stroll around the park and explore the museum which is open on schedules hours.

Where to eat in Downtown?

Craving for Mexican food, we visited the Tijuana Burrito Grill in Newport downtown. It’s amongst the top 10 burrito places in Newport, Rhode Island. We has a veggie bowl & absolutely loved it. Delicious and Authentic.
